Zimbabwe’s government has used mass atrocities against civilians to repress political opponents and consolidate power since the country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1980. Although the Early Warning Project does not record an ongoing mass killing in Zimbabwe, significant repression of civil society and protest activity has persisted since Emmerson Mnangagwa seized power from the regime of Robert Mugabe in a military coup.
