Programs on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust
The Programs on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust (PERH) foster scholarship, teaching, and reflection on the profound ethical, theological, and historical questions raised by the Holocaust.
Located in the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, PERH promotes and supports:
- New scholarship on religious institutions and religious dynamics during the Holocaust and the ways in which religious institutions, leaders, and theologians have addressed these legacies since 1945;
- The integration of the study of the Holocaust into the curriculum of seminaries and theological schools and the study of religion into the field of Holocaust Studies;
- Learning and reflection on the Holocaust and its profound moral implications for people of all religions.
PERH engages a wide range of topics from multi-disciplinary perspectives including:
- The German Churches and other Religious Communities in Nazi Germany
- Religious Communities across Europe and North America during the Holocaust
- Religious Leaders and Professionals during the Holocaust
- Coming to Terms with the Past: How People of Faith Have Addressed the Legacy of Antisemitism and the Holocaust
- Jewish Religious Life during the Holocaust
PERH is advised by the Committee on Ethics, Religion, and the Holocaust (CERH) of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council.
Through PERH, the Mandel Center works actively with the Council of Centers on Jewish-Christian Relations (CCJR) and other interfaith organizations. PERH partners include many member seminaries in the Association of Theological Schools as well as leaders of all faiths. The Mandel Center is a Related Scholarly Organization of the American Academy of Religion (AAR).
