"The Jewish Councils (Judenräte) in the Lublin District 1939-1943"

Professional Background

Professor Adam Kopciowski received his Ph.D. and M.A. in modern history from Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin, Poland. During his fellowship at the Museum, he was Assistant Professor in Jewish History at the Center for Jewish Studies at Marie Curie-Sklodowska University. For his Joyce and Arthur Schechter Fellowship, Professor Kopciowski conducted research on “The Jewish Councils (Judenräte) in the Lublin District 1939-1943.”

Professor Kopciowski has authored over a dozen scholarly articles on the history of the Jewish populations in Zamość and Lublin, Poland. He created and published the full list of the Jewish population of Zamość during 1940 and co-authored a Web site about the history of the Jews in the Lublin district. As a researcher for the Theresienstadt Memorial Museum in the Czech Republic, Professor Kopciowski worked on projects dealing with the history of the Czech, German, Austrian, and Slovakian Jews who were deported to the Lublin District. He has also worked as a guide and lecturer for the State Museum at Majdanek in Lublin. Professor Kopciowski has participated in various academic conferences and presented his work in public lectures organized by the Center for Jewish Studies at Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, the Cultural Center in Lublin, Polish-Israeli Friendship Society in Lublin, and the Regional Museum in Zamość, among others.

Fellowship Research

During his residency at the Center, Professor Kopciowski conducted research on the Jewish Councils in the Lublin District, focusing on their legal basis, demographics, activities, and relations to the Nazi administration and Jewish population.

Professor Kopciowski was in residence at the Mandel Center from February 1 to May 1, 2005.
