“The People’s Dictatorship: A History of Nazi Germany”
Professional Background
Dr. Alan Steinweis is Professor of History and Leonard and Carolyn Miller Distinguished Professor of Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont. As the Ina Levine Invitational Scholar, Dr. Steinweis will be conducting research for his project, “The People’s Dictatorship: A History of Nazi Germany.”
From 2009 to 2018, Dr. Steinweis served as Director of UVM’s Miller Center for Holocaust Studies. Previously he was Professor of History and Judaic Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Assistant Professor of History at Florida State University. He has been the recipient of numerous academic awards and fellowships. From 2013-2015, he held the Chair for Jewish History and Culture at the University of Munich (Germany). In 2011 he held the guest professorship in Holocaust and German-Jewish history at the Fritz Bauer Institute in Frankfurt (Germany).
Dr. Steinweis is further the author of Kristallnacht 1938 (Harvard University Press, 2009), Studying the Jew: Scholarly Antisemitism in Nazi Germany (Harvard University Press, 2006), and Art, Ideology and Economics in Nazi Germany: The Reich Chambers of Music, Theater, and the Visual Arts (University of North Carolina Press, 1996). He is the co-editor of numerous additional volumes, including, Holocaust Memory in a Globalizing World (Wallstein-Verlag, 2017), and The German People and the Holocaust (Berghahn Books, 2016). Most recently he published the introduction to My Opposition: The Diary of Friedrich Kellner – A German against the Third Reich (Cambridge Univeristy Press, 2018).
Dr. Steinweis is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institut für Zeitgeschichte (Munich-Berlin), the Series Editor of the monograph series, The Comprehensive History of the Holocaust (University of Nebraska Press and Yad Vashem), and a member of the International Advisory Board for the multi-volume document collection The Persecution and Murder of the Jews of Europe, published by a consortium of German institutions in cooperation with Yad Vashem.
Fellowship Research
While in residence at the Mandel Center, Dr. Steinweis is will conduct research on the history of Nazi Germany. Specifically, he will utilize Museum resources to support research for his forthcoming book, The People’s Dictatorship: A History of Nazi Germany (Cambridge University Press). He will also conduct research for and deliver the Ina Levine Annual Lecture on December 10, 2018, entitled, “'The Idea of Eliminating the Leadership Would Not Let Me Rest': Georg Elser’s Attempted Assassination of Hitler in November 1939 and Its Aftermath."
