“Establishing a Document Edition: Turkey and the Holocaust”

Professional Background

Dr. Corinna (Corry) Guttstadt is a lecturer for Turkish Studies, University of Hamburg (Germany). She earned her PhD from the University of Hamburg (Germany) in 2009, in addition to teaching there. In 2011/2012 Dr. Guttstadt also was a project manager at the Anne Frank Center-Berlin, where she developed material for teaching history across cultures using Turkish-German biographies.

While in residence in the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, Dr. Guttstadt conducted research on her project entitled “Establishing a Document Edition: Turkey and the Holocaust.”

Dr. Guttstadt is a native speaker of German and possesses linguistic skills in Turkish, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Kurdish, Persian, and Ottoman.

Dr. Guttstadt has many published works to her name, including several books and journal articles. These include: Turkey, the Jews, and the Holocaust (2013), which was also published in German and Turkish; “Die auf den Weg ohne Heimkehr getrieben wurden” (together with Şeyda Demirdirek) in Anthology of Armenian reports of Deported and Survivors in Literature and Memories, published with the State Agency for Civic Education in Hamburg, April 2013; "Holocaust anması ve Türkiye’deki inkâr politikası / HATIRLAMAK BANALLEŞTİRME – İSTİSMAR" ("Commemoration – Trivialisation – Misuse: Holocaust remembrance and denial of Genocide in Turkey") in the Turkish Journal, Birikim No. 299 April 2014 (a volume on Holocaust and Genocides, that she also contributed editing).

Fellowship Research

Dr. Guttstadt has organized several conferences, including International Conference on the Situation of the Kurds after the Political Changes in the Middle East in the 1990s, University of Hamburg, November 2000; and Conference on the Pogrom of Alevis in Sivas, Turkey, University of Hamburg, July 1993 and July 1994. 

For her Judith B. and Burton P. Resnick Invitational Fellowship for the Study of Antisemitism, Dr. Guttstadt used the Museum’s archives to further her goal of creating a comprehensive collection of documents relating to Turkey’s role in the Holocaust.

Dr. Guttstadt was in residence at the Mandel Center from April 1 to June 30, 2014.
