"Finding Treblinka: Archaeological Investigations at Treblinka Extermination and Labour Camps"

Professional Background

Dr. Caroline Sturdy Colls is Associate Professor of Forensic Archeology and Genocide Investigation at Staffordshire University (United Kingdom). She holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham and an MPhil from the same institution. As a Fred and Maria Devinki Memorial Fellow, Dr. Sturdy Colls will be conducting research for her project entitled “Finding Treblinka: Archaeological Investigations at Treblinka Extermination and Labour Camps.”

Dr. Sturdy Colls has writing and speaking ability in Polish, and reading ability in German.

Dr. Sturdy Colls is the author of two monographs; Holocaust Archaeologies: Approaches and Future Direction (New York: Springer, 2015) and Forensic Approaches to Buried Remains [with J. Hunter and B. Simpson] (London: Wiley, 2013). She is also the author of multiple articles including her most recent “Uncovering a Painful Past: Archaeology and the Holocaust” in Conservation and Management of Archeological Sites (17(1), 38-55).

Fellowship Research

While in residence at the Mandel Center as the Fred and Maria Devinki Memorial Fellow, Dr. Sturdy Colls researched the importance of objects, forgotten narratives, and archeological research in relation to Treblinka. She used the museums documents, photographs, and maps for this project.

Dr. Sturdy Colls was in residence at the Mandel Center until December 31, 2016.
