"Europe and the ‘Final Solution,’ 1941-1945"

Professional Background

Dr. Florent Brayard received a Ph.D. in history from Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris and an M.A in history from École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. During his fellowship at the Museum, he was a Researcher at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique Institut d’Histoire du Temps Présent in Paris, France. For his Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Fellowship, Dr. Brayard conducted research on “Europe and the ‘Final Solution,’ 1941-1945.”

Dr. Brayard is author of the monographs La solution finale de la question juive: La technique, le temps et les catégories de la décision (2004) and Comment l’idée vint à M. Rassinier, Naissance du révisionnisme (1996). He has also edited a collection of articles on genocide, and authored several articles on the “Final Solution.” Dr. Brayard has worked as a Research Fellow at the CNRS/French Foreign Office, Center Marc Bloch, Berlin, and he is the recipient of several distinguished fellowships from institutions and foundations including the German Historical Institute in Paris; the Hamburger Institut für Sozialforschung; the Vidal Sasson Center for the Study of Antisemitism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; and the Thyssen Foundation. Dr. Brayard participated in dozens of academic conferences and directed seminars and colloquiums on subjects such as the history of Nazism, the Holocaust, Adolf Eichmann, and Holocaust denial.

Fellowship Research

During his residency at the Center, Dr. Brayard researched how the “Final Solution” was implemented by different countries in Europe. His study opened new perspectives in the political context of the Holocaust concentrating on the European diplomatic interactions surrounding the extermination of the Jews.

Dr. Brayard was in residence at the Mandel Center from Janaury 15 to August 15, 2005.
