“The Jewish Community in Postwar Greece: Between Assimilation and Exclusion.”

Professional Background

Dr. Kateřina Králová is assistant professor in Contemporary History at the Balkan, Eurasian and Central European Studies of the Institute of International Studies and former Vice-Dean for International Relations (2010-2015 at the Faculty of Social Science, Charles University in Prague) (Czech Republic).  She is fluent in English, German, Czech, and Greek, and possesses communication skills in Russian and French. While in residence at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, Dr. Králová conducted research on her project, “The Jewish Community in Postwar Greece: Between Assimilation and Exclusion.”

Her most current lectures and presentations include “Jews, Communists, and Germans: Greece's handling of its post-war legacies” at the South East European Studies at Oxford – United Kingdom (March 2015), “The Holocausts in Greece: Victim Competition in the Context of  Post-War Compensation for Nazi Persecution” at the international conference Beyond Camps and Forced Labour, London – United Kingdom (January 2015), “Die deutsche Besatzung Griechenlands im Zweiten Weltkrieg und das Problem der 'Wiedergutmachung” at the Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung Regensburg – Germany (December 2014), “How is it to be a Holocaust survivor in Greece? Memories of the post-war period 1944-1953” at the international conference The Holocaust in Greece, Thessaloniki – Greece (November 2014).

Fellowship Research

For her Sosland Fellowship, Dr. Králová used the records of the Jewish communities of Salonika, Greece, the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs Archives, as well as the International Tracing Service to supplement her project on restoration and restitution of the Jewish community in Greece, the reinvention of the Jewish elite, emigration, antisemitism, recasting of identity, and commemoration of the past between 1944 and 2012.

Dr. Kateřina Králová was in residence at the Mandel Center from June 1, 2015 to January 31, 2016.
