Professional Background
Lindsay MacNeill is currently PhD candidate in History at American University. She holds an MA in Modern European History from the same institution. As the Diane and Howard Wohl Fellow, Ms. MacNeill will be conducting research for her project entitled “Policing Politics in Austria, 1918-1955.”
Ms. MacNeill has reading and speaking skills in both Spanish and German.
Ms. MacNeill is the winner of several awards and fellowships. She was a Junior fellow in Vienna, Austria with the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies during 2016. She also received a 2016-2017 Fulbright-Mach award to conduct research in Vienna, Austria. She was the winner of a Doctoral Student Research Award from American University in 2015.
Fellowship Research
While in residence at the Mandel Center, Ms. MacNeill researched the conduct of the Austrian Police under successive regimes, including the Austrian First Republic, the Austrofascist dictatorship, Nazi Austria, and postwar Austria. She was especially interested in how these significant regime changes affected the careers of individual police officers and the force as a whole. Her research explored police training and education, police conduct towards criminals and political opponents, and police attitudes towards the government and society. She used the museums various collections, including the Vienna Component collection.
Ms. MacNeill was in residence at the Mandel Center until October 31, 2017.
