“Holocaust in Ukraine: Contemporary Discussions in Ukrainian and Foreign Historiography”
Professional Background
Ms. Anna Medvedovska is PhD candidate in Ukrainian history at Oles Honchar Dnipropetrovsk National University in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast (Ukraine). She received her MA in Jewish history from the same institution in 2011. Ms. Medvedovska has language skills in Ukrainian, Russian, English, Polish, German, and Yiddish. While in residence at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, Ms. Medvedovska conducted research on her project, “Holocaust in Ukraine: Contemporary Discussions in Ukrainian and Foreign Historiography.”
Ms. Medvedovska has published several essays, including “Modern Ukrainian Historiography of the Holocaust” (Сучасна українська історіографія Голокосту, 2013), “Memorialization of the Holocaust in Ukraine during the second part of 20th Century” (Мемориалізація Голокосту в Україні протягом другої половини ХХ ст., 2014), and “Holocaust historiography in Ukraine: general trends of the Independence period” (Историография истории Холокоста в Украине: общие тенденции периода независимости, 2014).
She has worked as a Senior Research Associate and Research Programs Coordinator for the Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies “Tkuma.” She also was a coordinator and co-creator of the several permanent exhibitions at the “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine” Museum in the Menorah Jewish Cultural Center, Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine.
Fellowship Research
For her Fellowship, part of the Initiative on Ukrainian-Jewish Shared History and the Holocaust in Ukraine, Ms. Medvedovska conducted research on perceptions of the Holocaust in Ukraine in the Western historiography and public thought, its reflection and impact on Ukrainian Holocaust Studies, as well as interrelations and interdependence between Ukrainian and western historiography on the Holocaust. Her study analyzed different areas of public discourse such as literature, mass media, cinematography, memorial practices, and historiography.
Ms. Medvedovska was in residence at the Mandel Center from November 1, 2015 to March 30, 2016.
