Khalif is a former resident of Kocho who lived in New Zealand for 17 years. In January 2015, after the self-proclaimed Islamic State massacred men and boys in Kocho in August 2014, Khalif returned to Iraq to search for members of his family, including his mother and first wife. He currently lives in a displaced persons camp in Iraqi Kurdistan.
