Romy, a member of the Sabaean-Mandaeans, a small ethno-religious group with just a few thousand members remaining, served as the Sabaean-Mandaeans’ sole representative to the Iraqi parliament. With the Sabaean-Mandaeans persecuted by the self-proclaimed Islamic State, known locally as Daesh, he took steps to protect his family and his people.
