Oleksandr Marinchenko (1985–2022)

Share

With great sadness we note the passing on October 21, 2022, of our friend and partner Oleksandr Marinchenko, a senior researcher at Dmytro Yavornytsky National History Museum of Dnipro and former United States Holocaust Memorial Museum fellow.

Since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Oleksandr Marinchenko actively volunteered to support humanitarian and relief work, assisting internally displaced people. He fully committed himself to helping others and debunking the Russian disinformation and propaganda campaign. He died as a result of health complications caused by the ongoing Russian war on Ukraine.

Born in Dnipropetrovsk in 1985, Oleksandr Marinchenko dedicated his entire life to research and teaching about World War II and Holocaust in eastern Europe. Marinchenko taught courses on this history at Oles Honchar National University and Dnipropetrovsk State University of Internal Affairs. Between 2003 and 2008, he studied history at Oles Honchar National University. For his doctoral research project, Marinchenko examined the history and fate of Soviet prisoners of war during World War II, who were victims of German persecution and mass murder. Mr. Marinchenko authored several publications, and his research was supported by many prestigious awards, including the 2011-2012 Diane and Howard Wohl fellowship at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2013 Yahad-in Unum fellowship (Paris, France), and the 2016 Institute for Human Sciences (Vienna, Austria) among others.

His commitment to Holocaust memory and education as well as Ukrainian democracy and independence were steadfast. He will be greatly missed.
