This exhibition focuses on the efforts of the Museum’s Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide to bring attention to the people and places at risk today for genocide and other mass atrocities.
The Museum has been deeply concerned about the genocidal violence of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and the group-targeted violence of the Assad regime in Syria. People are being targeted for persecution and death on the basis of their religious, ethnic, and political identities, contributing to the world’s largest refugee crisis since World War II and the Holocaust.
This exhibition is part of the Museum’s ongoing focus on drawing attention to genocide and mass atrocities being committed in the region. The Museum has:
- Sponsored Bearing Witness trips to the region and in an October 2015 report declared that ISIS had committed genocide against the Yezidis and crimes against humanity against other religious and ethnic minorities.
- Worked to keep the crisis in Syria in the public eye through reports, exhibitions at the Museum, in the US Congress, public programs, and more.
